TALLAHASSEE, FL – In an effort to increase recycling in Leon County, the Board of County Commissioners has contracted with Marpan Recycling to process certain debris that was previously disposed of at the Apalachee Solid Waste Management Facility.

Leon County Administrator Parwez Alam expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration by saying, “This type of action is what makes the County a cleaner place to live now and will make us a more sustainable community as we move into the future.”

Items such as construction and demolition debris, cardboard, furniture and carpet will now be processed for recycling at the Marpan facility, 6020 Woodville Hwy. The City of Tallahassee will also be delivering those materials to Marpan to be recycled.

“This is a great opportunity for our community, as well as our environmental responsibility,” said Bryan Desloge, Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners.

The County has partnered with such organizations as the International Council on Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) to continue initiating smart energy strategies and developing methods for a more sustainable future.

Kim Williams, owner of Marpan Recycling, said the County’s decision to close the landfill and recycle this type of waste will go a long way to protecting the community’s future.

“This decision will be good for the environment, good for taxpayers, and good for our local economy – it’s more than a win-win, it’s a win-win-win for everyone,” said Williams. “Their cooperative spirit and willingness to think outside the box will serve our community well for years to come.”

Effective Jan. 1, 2009, the Landfill Operations at the Apalachee facility, 7550 Apalachee Pkwy., will be closed to the general public. The facility will continue to accept waste tires and clean loads of yard trash (no plastic bags), Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
