fluo·res·cent lamp - a low pressure mercury vapor discharge light source. the electric discharge generates ultra-violet (UV) energy, which is absorbed by a phosphor and converted to visible light. fluorescent is one of three broad categories of electric lamps, the other two are incandescent and high-intensity discharge.
the most popular fluorescent lamp is 'straight glass tube', also known as 'linear'. its shape is expressed as 't' for 'tubular', followed by a number that represents its diameter in 1/8's of an inch. compact fluorescent lamps employ small diameter tubes that are bent so they begin and end in a single base. this allows them to be produced in a wide variety of configurations, greatly extending the applications for fluorescent lighting.
curvalume and circline fluorescent lamps are the irregular shaped siblings in the fluorescent family. this line is similar to the straight glass tube, but offers a space saving design. ecologic fluorescent lamps are the wave of the future. these products pass the EPA's TCLP (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) test at end of life and are environmentally friendly. their key feature is reduced levels of mercury and lead, and in some cases, no mercury or lead.
