 high in·ten·si·ty dis·charge - lamps in which an arc passing between two electrodes in a pressurized tube causes various metallic additives to vaporize and release large amounts of light. all HID lamps offer outstanding energy efficiency and service life. metal halide lamps also offer good to excellent color rendering index (CRI). HID is one of three broad categories of electric lamps, the other two are incandescent and fluorescent.
there are ten families of metal halide metalarc® lamps. with good color and high efficiency, these general purpose HID's are offered in many configurations to meet your application needs. available in standard and safe-line (a type that self extinguishs if the envelope is broken), mercury lamps offer good efficiency and long life in applications where color rendering requirements are moderate.
high pressure sodium lamps designed to be used where high efficiency and long life are desired while color rendering is not critical. the six families of high pressure sodium lamps include lead-free, reduced-mercury content and no-lead, no-mercury configurations that operate on existing HPS ballasts. ecologic HID lamps offer no-lead, reduced-mercury levels and in some cases no-lead and no-mercury content at all. these products pass the EPA's TCLP (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) test at end of life and are environmentally friendly.
