in·can·des·cent lamp - a light source using the principle of incandescence. when an electric current passes through a filament wire (usually tungsten), the heated wire glows. filaments of standard incandescent lamps are enclosed in a vacuum or gas-filled bulb. incandescent is one of three broad categories of electric lamps, the other two are fluorescent and high-intensity discharge.
the standard incandescent is the most common general purpose light bulb on the market, from a-shape to pear-shape, this line provides low initial cost, good color rendition and excellent optical control. decorative lamps are offered in various shapes and finishes, are used in a broad range of applications, and many are double life. this family of incandescent lamps is the 'eye candy' of the lighting industry.
"par" lamps (in the shape of a paraboloid) are popular from interior tracklighting to exterior floodlighting, made from a heavy walled borosilicate glass, many are tungsten hologen, the 'lamp within a lamp' design. quartz lamps, part of the tungsten halogen family, are irregular in shape, provide brighter, whiter light, better color characteristics, longer life and improved energy efficiency.
